Origami Book

This is a very simple book to create that needs no sewing or gluing. A piece of paper and a pair of scissors are all it takes. If you have a bone folder to burnish the folds, all the better, but not necessary. This is a great book to make as a kid’s project since it doesn’t take any special equipment or skill.

You can start either by folding a blank piece of paper and then adding the content, or plan ahead a little and print the pages first.

If you are going to print the pages first be sure to look at the diagram below (a) to see how the pages will fall once the paper is folded. Some of the images will need to be printed upside down to end up correctly oriented once the book is folded, as you can see from the numbers that are upside-down in the image below.

Start by folding the paper in half lengthwise (b). Then fold t in half two more times in t he other direction (c) until you have a folded document that looks more-or-less like (d). Then unfold the entire piece of paper (e) and refold the original folds in the opposite direction so they bend easily in both directions.

Arrange the paper so that it is shaped something like an upside-down letter W when viewed from the edge, with valley folds on either side and a mountain fold in the middle (f). Bring the mountain fold together (so that the 3 touches the 4 and the 7 touches the 8 in the (f) diagram below), and then cut the center line shown in (g).

Keep the paper folded in half but push the sides together to open up the center area created by cutting the opening.

In the example above with the numbered pages you would grab hold of pages 3/4 and 7/8 and fold the other sides together, making 1/2 and 5/6 meet. If you were to grab hold of 1/2 and 5/6 and pull your hands apart, you would create the opening you see in  (h).

Pushing your hands together again brings all of the folds together (i). Rearrange the pages by folding them around the center fold until you get all the pages in the right order (j & k).
